Location
Hindu School is situated in the heart of the
Kolkata ( Calcutta ) city, surrounded by Presidency College & Hare
School, Sanskrit College, Indian Coffee House, College Square and
Calcutta University. It is located right in the middle of the famous
Boipara in College Street. Entwined by tram lines and narrow lanes
replete with makeshift bookstalls constructed with wood, bamboo, sheets
of corrugated tin and canvas, displaying and housing a bewildering
collection of books on a wide variety of subjects ranging from Physics
to Palmistry, this heritage place truly exudes an essence of nostalgia
and historical significance right from the moment one steps into it.
Administration
Currently, Hindu School is under the management
of the Government of West Bengal. It is affiliated to the West Bengal
Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) for the Madhyamik (Secondary)
curriculum and to West Bengal Council for Higher Secondary Education
(WBCHSE) for Higher Secondary (10+2). It is a Bengali medium all boys
school.
Academics
The school contains two academic sections – Primary
and Secondary. The Primary Section (a.k.a. “Morning Section”) for
students from class I-V meeting from 7 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. and the
Secondary Section (a.k.a. “Day Section”) is for students from class
VI-XII meeting from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Both sections usually start with a
prayer and the national anthem of India. Each class in the primary
section is divided into two sections A and B where as the secondary
section has an additional section C till class X after which students
are grouped according to their choice of specializations – Science ,
Arts, Commerce and “Eco-Geo-Stat” during class XI-XII. Students can
take an additional subject in class IX-X. Students looking to pursue
Science in future can take Mechanics, Mathematics, Physics, Biology as
the additional subject, whereas students looking to pursue Arts can
take Psychology, Logic or Sanskrit and students looking to build a
career in Commerce can take up Book-keeping. The school has a dedicated
and sincere faculty for whom the academic interests of the students are
of utmost importance and it can boast of consistently excellent results
both in the Secondary and Higher Secondary examinations, far surpassing
the results of the average schools
Dress code for both the sections are different. White shirt and white
trousers are the main dresses for the morning section boys whereas the
day section boys wear white shirt and navy blue trouser. During winter,
students in the morning section wear bottle green sweater and the day
section students wear navy blue sweater. Wearing the school badge is a
must for all the students.
Since the last 190 years, Hindu School has offered more that 17,000
students to take eduction from this glorious institution. In a
particular calendar year, there are approximately 1,100 students, in
both the Primary and Secondary sections.
Admission
Students are admitted in three different levels.
For admission to the lowest level i.e. Class I , an open lottery system
(this is usually determined by the West Bengal Government's current
dictum at that time) is used and approximately 100+ students are
admitted at this time. Again in sixth & three standards there is an
enhancement of a class consisting of 30+ students through an open
written test conducted by the school. In both the cases, application
forms are obtained from the school office. For admission in the Higher
Secondary courses forms are issued just after the publication of
Madhyamik results of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and
students securing minimum 85 % marks in aggregate in Madhyamik (Varies
from year to year, please contact the Hindu School authorities for the
current requirements) or its equivalent are eligible to seek admission
for three different departments - Science, Commerce and Arts.
Extra-curricular Activities
Apart from the
academics, students actively participate in Intra-school and
Inter-School activities such as Quizzes, Debates, Dram competitions,
winning awards on a regular basis. Most of the morning section classes
publish their own wall magazine, where students contribute poems, short
stories, drawings, scientific articles. There is also an annual
magazine “Harit” , published by the magazine committee consisting of
both teachers and students.
The school is equipped well enough to encourage the students to develop
athletic skills and interest in games of their choice. There is an
indoor game room equipped with two table tennis tables for use of
students during break time. An annual sports day is organized on the
Presidency College Ground, at which promising athletes and players are
identified. The staff accompanies them to inter school sports meets
regularly.
Annual Events
The Foundation day is organized by the school authority
on 20 January on every year. It is a wonderful time when ex-students
get a chance to catch up with old friends. Outstanding students are
awarded during this time. Hindu School celebrates some of the national
events like the Republic Day on January 26, Independence Day on August
15 and some religious occasions such as Saraswati Puja every year.
There is an official alumni association “Hindu School Alumni
Association (HSAA)” who look after the alumni get together events and
ex-students interaction with the school from all over the world.
The Atmosphere
One of the most attracting parts about Hindu School is
it's atmosphere filled with nostalgic and historical charms. Its
location in the famous Boipara, the tall classrooms built according to
British Architecture, the statues of Dr Satyendra Nath Basu and Henry
Derozio, the long list of illustrated alumni, fills one with a feeling
of sublimity and grandeur. Each and every particle of Hindu School has
its own value. Every ex-student gets nostalgic with any mention of its
name and feels extremely proud to be a part of this illustrious
institution.
